Bitcoin has the potential to do for finance what the internet did for communication, but there is work to do. Bitcoin is an open-source software engineering effort. This means that it is community-coordinated, funded, and managed. It advances thanks to individuals who commit their time and expertise, often without compensation. When software is available for free, there is little incentive for its consumers to pay for its development. This leaves open-source software vulnerable to the tragedy of the commons, where a commonly relied on resource is underfunded.

Bitcoin’s technical stack has largely been developed by Global North participants, where developers have the resources and freedom to contribute to ideologically rewarding projects. Though the Bitcoin open-source development ecosystem has seen significant growth and support already, including through some early efforts from ₿trust, it is critically missing representation from developers who experience the same financial exclusion that the technology aims to address.

₿trust was established to decentralize the development of the open-source technology stack that is fundamental to Bitcoin’s ability to act as a global, censorship-resistant financial system. This goal is mutually beneficial. Developers will gain the opportunity to contribute to cutting-edge and revolutionary technology, and Bitcoin will gain access to a previously untapped global talent pool and its unique perspective.

This is an exciting opportunity for an incoming CEO to build an early-stage organization. You do not need to be an expert on Bitcoin’s technical details, but you will need to be willing to learn about it and commit to the organisation’s ideals. We seek a strong operational leader with experience setting up and running early-stage mission-driven organizations in the Global South. Our ideal candidate is a leader who is willing to learn with the focus to cut through the noise of the broader cryptocurrency industry and understand the necessity of open-source, decentralized monetary systems.

If we do not find, fund, and support a diverse group of people to work on building Bitcoin, we have failed. Inclusion is not a value that we have retrofitted to our organization, it is the very core of what we aim to achieve.
